You've sang the spider song, you've put your left foot out, you've blown bubbles until you just can't blow anymore. Every parent searches for new play ideas, here are some game ideas to enjoy with your young child when you've run out of old favorites.
1. BACK AND FORTH
Sit on the floor, spread legs apart and face your child.
Hold your child's hands and lean forward as your child leans backward. Then lean backward as your child leans forward. As you move back and forth say "back and forth" to teach the movement concepts. Once you have the rhythm, sing a familiar song like "Row, row, row your boat".
2. HERE IS THE FATHER
Hold up one finger at a time, starting with the thumb, as you say the rhyme.
This is the father, short and stout.
This is the mother with the children about.
This is the brother tall as can be.
This is the sister with a toy on her knee.
This is the baby sure to grow.
This is the family all in a row.
3. Caterpillars and Butterflies
This rhyme is great for young children who are learning about the amazing change that a caterpillar goes through. Reading Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and searching for caterpillars and butterflies outside are perfect activities to go along with this rhyme and fingerplay.
Let's go to sleep, the caterpillars said.
(bend all of your fingers into your palm)
And they tucked themselves into their beds
They will awaken by and by
(slowly unfold one finger at a time)
And each one will be a butterfly.
(make flying motions with your hands)
