The positive relationship between your existing child and your new child begins from the first day when you bring your child home. When you bring your new baby into your home, make sure someone else carries the child so you can greet your existing child with a great big hug. You need to then spend some time with your existing child before you go and tend to your new baby. The key to establishing a positive relationship among your children is to make them feel love and not resentment. Throughout the first years and months of the life of your new child, be sure to spend an over abundance of time with your existing child.

You want to get their relationship off on a strong foot by involving your existing child in the caring process of your younger child. Give your older child responsibilities of watching the baby or of holding the bottle but being gentle. You’ll of course want to supervise your older child. Spend a lot of time talking about how good of a job the older child is doing.

The other main thing you need to do early on to get the relationship off on a good foot is to make sure you discuss the new baby with your older child. Let your child ask any questions she might have about the baby and about raising a baby. Answer the questions honestly. Let the entire child rearing process be educational. You may even want to encourage questions by your child. Ask if she has any questions about the new baby. Open discussions are always key.

As your children get older, let them play with each other and work out any differences on their own. They can grow close and begin a lifelong friendship. You’ll want to supervise as much as you can. But your children in their early years will learn a lot about life from just being around each other and working out their differences.
