Automotive Tips: automobile gas and engine additives

Which additives are really worth buying for your car's engine oil, gasoline and carburetor? A guide to products.

Where can you add automobile fluid additives?

Different types of additives are made to be used in different intake areas. STP Gas Treatment is designed for your gas tank. An oil treatment would be added where you add oil. There are additives to spray directly into a carburetor. These are the primary areas where the types of additives that will really do any good are typically added.

Why would you use additives?

Additives in your gas tank can make your engine last longer, perform better, keep from freezing up or make better use of gasoline. Additives in oil can preserve the engine and help it run smoothly. A good additive costs a little compared to what you will save in repairs and fuel costs.

What to add to your gas and for what uses?

STP Gas Treatment will dry up any water in the tank. It will also keep the fuel line from freezing up in the winter. Your engine will run more smoothly and start more reliably with its use. You will want to add one entire container just before filling up. Do this about every other fill up in the winter or any cold months. Add a container of STP to your gas anywhere from once a month to once every six weeks during the rest of the year. This may seem too frequent to some. However you will notice just enough savings in gas and wear and tear on your engine to make it worth your while over the long haul. If this doesn’t seem feasible, do it at least in winter and rainy seasons or any time the engine isn’t running smoothly or you think there may be precipitation in the gas tank. Just a little water, even a few drops, can do a lot of harm to your engine. Dehydrating the gasoline is what this additive is for among other things.

You can also use what is called dry gas for this same purpose. This stuff is a bit touchier and should only be used with caution. You need less dry gas than STP and for the same or less frequent intervals as when using STP. Don’t use it around heat or flame or while the engine is running.

What to add to your oil.

Add STP Oil Treatment to make the oil last longer. Here’s how I do it. Most oils and most cars they are in can wait for an oil change at least 6000 miles rather than the recommended 3000, creating a savings right there. Make sure that a lube job is actually done on the car and that the oil filter is changed as well; this is how a genuine lube job or lube, oil and filter is done. Check the oil every couple of weeks until you can add a half-quart and add STP Oil Treatment instead. Wait till the next time you get your oil changed to repeat this process. You may also add it again if you feel you’ll be a little late with the next change, like a 1000 to 5000 miles late.

What to spray directly into your carburetor if it is not a sealed carb.

Gumout is a great product that will help get a car running that won’t start or to clean a carburetor. Cleaning the carburetor (with a whole can of Gumout spray) at least each change of season will help keep it running smoothly and prevent stalling.
